Yell vs 1&1 IONOS - A Comparison to Discover Which Has the Better Builder

When it comes to building a website, sometimes it pays to look beyond the obvious choices. Yell is one of the UK’s top business directories, and 1&1 IONOS is one of America’s top web hosting providers.

Though these sites appear to have little in common, they do share at least one specific function: They both offer website builder services.

But which company is the better choice for building an amazing website? Let’s compare the features.

Yell vs 1&1 Battle

Templates: 1&1 IONOS Has More Layouts Than the Competition

A template, or theme, represents the basic structure of a website. The user chooses the layout and then simply populates it with their own photos, text, and other elements.

When it comes to templates, 1&1 IONOS is an industry leader with more than 10,000 options to choose from. There’s a theme available for almost every type of business or interest, and each of these themes is fully customizable.

Yell works a bit differently. They don’t offer a DIY website builder in the traditional sense. Rather, they take the time to get to know the user’s needs, and then they build a tailor-made website based on that information.

Their design team chooses from a limited pool of templates, and you then have the freedom to provide feedback and decide if it’s right for you. This option is a bit limiting, but it can be a favourable choice for those who aren’t entirely sure of what they want.

Features: Yell Wins for Design Options, SEO, and More

The individual features are what make any website builder worthwhile. 1&1 IONOS has its world-class website builder, which allows anyone to choose the ideal template and then build their perfect website using a simple drag-and-drop format.

Along the left column of the editor screen, there’s a series of easy-to-follow buttons like “Layout,” “Style,” “Manage Pages,” and “Insert Elements.” When any of these selections is clicked, the user is presented with a series of options that allow changes to be made on the fly. Add a textbox, import an image, or create a new page for the website. No coding skills are required, and there’s not much of a learning curve.

In addition, 1&1 IONOS has more than 20 million stock images to choose from as well as a custom photo editor and a range of SEO features to help to increase the site’s search engine rankings. For instance, you can easily enter meta tags (like title and description) and assign keywords to your images.

Yell does have a website editor, but it can only be accessed after the initial build is complete. This is actually an advantage as it affords users the freedom of controlling the look of their website while eliminating the difficulty of having to start from scratch. Anyone who wants to build a complete website on their own can use Yell’s partner service, Moonfruit.

All Yell websites are automatically search-engine-optimised with XML sitemaps and robots.txt files, and they’re mobile-friendly as well. Yell also provides a free domain and free ongoing support. Premium members are also eligible for professional design consultations, quarterly reviews, and even on-site photoshoots. Very few website builders offer these types of features.

Yell is an obvious choice for anyone who wants their website design and optimisation to be handled by a professional. As the charts above indicate, though, it’s not the budget choice.

With Yell, there’s a hefty up-front cost for the web build, and then there are additional monthly maintenance fees. Yell is especially costly for online storefronts as rates are determined by the number of products, required storage, estimated traffic, and other business needs.

1&1 IONOS not only provides a more affordable service for smaller businesses and basic websites, but the company even offers special deals to entice new customers.

This is what 1&1 IONOS customers can look forward to paying for the first year:

Ease of Use: Yell’s Professionals Take Care of Everything

Anyone who wants a simple and straightforward web-building experience should consider going with Yell. They do all of the initial work.

That’s not to say that 1&1 IONOS is difficult to use. Their website builder is extremely user-friendly, and the company will even make text and image suggestions based on a user’s industry and provided information.

With Yell, though, the professionals don’t just make suggestions; they actually take care of the legwork. They even optimise the back end of the site with items like meta tags and sitemaps. You never have to worry about the technical minutiae, and you don’t have to know what a “robots.txt” or “301 redirect” is.

Support: The 1&1 IONOS Team Goes Above and Beyond

Yell and 1&1 IONOS both offer fantastic 24/7 support, so it’s not easy declaring a winner in this category. With Yell, users can even benefit from personalized consultations and reviews on an ongoing basis. Their day-to-day support, though, is fairly standard.

1&1 IONOS, on the other hand, always goes above and beyond. We recently contacted them because we were struggling to set up an SSL certificate. Their support team walked us step-by-step through the entire setup process and even sent us email tutorials for further clarification. When we still couldn’t get it to work, their team took care of it for us. This didn’t require any sort of premium membership on our part.

Website Uses: Yell Can Build Stores, Blogs, and So Much More

Whether the goal is to build an online business or just set up a simple blog, 1&1 IONOS and Yell both make it easy.

With 1&1 IONOS, users can sift through more than 10,000 templates using simple search parameters like “Dental Practice” or “Food Blog.” The more specific the search, the easier it will be to find the perfect template.

With Yell, just describe the nature of the website or business, and the professionals take care of the rest. While 1&1 IONOS limits users to the existing design options, Yell can actually custom-design a layout that meets anyone’s specific needs. This is especially useful for anyone who’s trying to break into an unusual niche that may not already have a theme associated with it.

With Yell, it’s even possible to find the perfect layout for that 17th century Russian literature website or Danish-language disco music outlet.

Winner: Yell

Overall Winner: 1&1 IONOS

In all sincerity, this one is a bit of a tossup. Yell may be the better choice for serious professionals who wish to delegate the most demanding web design tasks to a professional, but the price and features are beyond the needs of most users.

With 1&1 IONOS, users have full control over a website that costs very little money to build. The incredible support team is always available, and the website builder is remarkably easy to use. Additional features like a massive stock image library and premium mailbox are just icing on the cake.
